When studying numerology, I have always studied the Chaldean numerology system rather than the Pythagorean system. I was always more drawn to it, and it just makes more sense to me. I was first introduced to the Chaldean system of numerology (the first time in this lifetime anyway, haha) by Linda Goodman in her book Star Signs, when I was quite young. It is the oldest system of numerology, and is based on the inextricable link between astrology, numerology, and mathematics (sacred geometry), and the numeric value for each letter is assigned based on vibration rather than what order the letters of the alphabet come in. That is what numerology is after all – the study of the vibrations of the letters and numbers, rather than on what order the letters come in. Below are the letters that vibrate to each number in the Chaldean Numerology System:
1 – A, I, J, Q, Y
2 – B, K, R
3 – C, G, L, S
4 – D, M, T
5 – E, H, N, X
6 – U, V, W
7 – O, Z
8 – F, P
You will notice that there is no letter assigned to 9. 9 is still used in this system of course, but only when compounding the numbers (adding them together to get the single key number – when the numbers add up to a 9, then the 9 is used). Linda Goodman states in Star Signs that the reason for this is that 9 represents the mystery name of the Supreme power over life, and so is too sacred to have a single letter of the alphabet represent it*.
In order to find the single key number of your name, simply add the numbers of the letters of your name together going across horizontally (first and middle and last names separately), then compound the numbers of each name (add any double digits of each name to get the single key number of each name), then add the single digits of each name together, and then add the double digits together to get the single key number of your name. Here is an example:
M A R K T W A I N
4+1+2+2 =9 4+6+1+1+5 =17. 1+7=8
9 + 8 = 17
1 + 7 = 8
The single key numbers of each name will also have a secondary influence, as well as nicknames and changing a name or the spelling will have a powerful influence on the vibration of that person and how others perceive them.
The single key numbers (1 through 9) in Chaldean Numerology represent how the world sees an individual, and how that individual feels the most comfortable expressing themselves. The single key number of your name is a powerful influence, but not as poweful as the single key number of your birth, as this number marks the day you incarnated here on Earth, represents your first day here, and remains fixed (you can change your name, but you cannot change your birthdate). In Chaldean Numerology, your single key birth number is based on the day of the month you were born (not including the year or month. Your whole birthdate compounded is called the secondary key number of birth and does have a secondary influence). If your birthday is a single digit number, then that number is your single key birth number. If it is a double digit number, compound the numbers to find your single key birth number (add them together). So if your birthday is the 31st of the month, then you would add the 3 and the 1 to get your single key birth number of 4: 3 + 1 = 4. The compound key birth number in this case is 31. The compound numbers do have meanings as well, that relate more to karmic influences rather than individual characteristics of a person, but I simply do not have enough time or room here to list them all (a search online could find the meanings of them, and they are also listed in Star Signs). It is a good idea to plan important events on the same date as your single key number of birth, as the energy will be compatible with your energy and the energy of your goals in mind.
To calculate your secondary single key number of birth, which according to Linda Goodman has influence, but is not as powerful as your single key number of birth*, simply add up the single compounded numbers of your entire birthdate. For instance, if you were born on December 9th, 1981, you would add up the digits that make up the date to get the single number of 4, which is your secondary single key number of birth:
December = 12th month = 12. 9th = 9. 1981 = 1+9+8+1 = 19
12 = 1 + 2 = 3 9 19 = 1 + 9 = 10 = 1 + 0 = 1
3 + 9 + 1 = 13 = 1 +3 = 4
Make sure you compound each part of the date separately first (the same way you add up the numbers that make up each separate name separately when calculating the single key number of the name), never adding up all of the numbers or letters together in a single calculation. The compounded numbers of each part of the date have influence, as well (for instance, the number 12 would be influential in the above birthdate because the person was born in the 12th month).
Here is a list of keywords and description associated with each number (I used Linda Goodmans Star Signs as a reference, where I first learned this system of numerology from*). A person will exhibit the characteristics (the keywords) of their number, and how strongly and how often they exhibit them is influenced by their Sun sign and astrological chart as well. When looking at how the astrological influences affect the numerological influences, take into consideration the dominant sign of the birth chart, not just the Sun Sign (you can order a free birth chart online to see what sign(s) dominate your chart, or order one through my Booking a Reading page here):
1: Vibrates to the Sun. A person is a 1 if they were born on the 1st, 10th, 19th, or 28th day of any month of any year. 1 is the number of original action*. Creativity, independence, pride, initiation, action, leadership, inventiveness, original. A 1 person will be proud, self-oriented, independent, and want to take charge and lead. They love to be noticed, and are so proud, they do not like people to point out their flaws. They must watch for a tendency towards self-centerdness. The 1 vibration will intensify the characteristics of a Leo, harmonize with the traits of an Aries, Sagittarius, Gemini, or Libra, sometimes oppose the nature of an Aquarius, and subdue some of the traits of a Scorpio, Taurus, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, or Capricorn*.
2: Vibrates to the Moon. A person is a 2 if they were born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th, or 29th day of any month of any year. Conception, imagination, dreams, partnership, nurturance, caring, cooperation, love, childbirth, dreams. A 2 person wants to nurture others and is very other oriented. They are more receptive than action oriented. The 2 vibration will be intensified when the person is a Cancer, harmonized when the person is a Scorpio, Pisces, Virgo, or Taurus, sometimes opposed when the person is a Capricorn, and subdued when the person is an Aries, Libra, Gemini, Sagittarius, Aquarius, or Leo*.
3: Vibrates to the planet Jupiter. A person is a 3 if they were born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st, or 30th day of any month of any year. Idealism, travel, expansion, ideas, religion, philosophy, creativity, communication, people, social activity, truth seeking, independence, learning. A 3 person loves learning and loves seeking truth and ideas. They are usually very social and talkative, but also need some time to retreat and think. The 3 vibration will be intensified when the person is a Sagittarius, harmonized when the person is an Aries, Leo, Aquarius, or Libra, sometimes opposed when the person is a Gemini, and subdued when the person is a Pisces, Virgo, Capricorn, Scorpio, Taurus, or Cancer*.
4: Vibrates to the planet Uranus. A person is a 4 if they were born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd, or 31st day of any month of any year. 4 people are always different and never follow the crowd. They are very curious and love far out ideas. They are strangely fixed and stubborn at the same time, even though 4 can represent abrupt change. Individualism, originality, inventiveness, structure, shock, distruption. 4 also represents structure, so 4 people again can be very fixed and structured, but they also have the need to disrupt it. The 4 vibration will be intensified when the person is an Aquarius, harmonized when the person is a Gemini, Libra, Aries, Sagittarius, sometimes opposed when the person is a Leo, and subdued when the person is a Scorpio, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn, or Pisces*.
5: Vibrates to the planet Mercury. A person is a 5 if they were born on the 5th, 14th, or 23rd day of any month of any year. Communication, versatility, dynamism, magic, change, intellectualism, thought. 5 people are generally naturally charming, talkative, and sociable. They love change and movement. They dislike routine. They are very intellectual and analytical, rather than emotional. The 5 vibration will be intensified when the person is a Gemini or Virgo, sometimes opposed when the person is a Sagittarius or Pisces, and because of the changing nature of the number 5, Linda Goodman states that it can be either subdued or harmonized by the other signs*.
6: Vibrates to the planet Venus. A person is a 6 if they were born on the 6th, 15th, or 24th day of any month of any year. Love, romance, money, art, music, the finer things in life, entertaining, beauty, harmony. A 6 person is usually in love with love and romance, is sentimental, and loves anything in good taste and enjoys the finer things in life. They hate rudeness and shocking behaviour. They have to watch for overindulgence. The 6 vibration will be intensified when the person is a Taurus or Libra, be opposed if the person is a Scorpio or Aries, and according to Linda Goodman, sometimes oppose and sometimes harmonize with the characteristics of the other signs*.

They often have some kind of spiritual gift and are drawn to the unknown, and can be artistic. They are not interested in materialism and can be secretive. The 7 vibration will be intensified when the person is a Pisces, sometimes opposed when the person is a Virgo, harmonized when the person is a Scorpio, Cancer, Capricorn, or Taurus, and contrasted when the person is a Sagittarius, Gemini, Aquarius, Aries, Libra, or Leo*.

Wisdom, experience, stability, responsibility, reliability, focus, respect, caution, self-restriction, self-control, discipline. 8 people can be reserved and serious. They are not usually talkative and prefer to observe rather than be the center of attention. With harmonious astrological influences, they are reliable and responsible and learn much through experience, have much patience, and are hard-working and diligent. They are usually very deliberate rather than spontaneous. The 8 vibration will be intensified when the person is a Capricorn, sometimes opposed when the person is a Cancer, harmonized when the person is a Pisces, Scorpio, Virgo, or Taurus, and contrasted when the person is an Aries, Libra, Gemini, Leo, Aquarius, and Sagittarius*.
9: Vibrates to the planet Mars. A person is a 9 if they were born on the 9th, 18th, or 27th day of any month of any year.
